Another important byproduct of PSIL sugar factory is Molasses. Molasses or treacle is thick syrup extracted from the processing of the sugarcane into sugar. The quality of molasses is depend on three major factors i.e. maturity of the sugar cane, the amount of sugar extracted and the method of extraction.

 


The PSIL is well known for production of quality Molasses in Sri Lanka. Unsulfured molasses is made at the PSIL sugar factory out of mature sugar cane and does not require any treatment using sulfur during the extraction process. Internationally there are three grades of molasses have been identified. They are, Mild or first molasses, Dark or second molasses, and Black strap.
